India is running out of vaccines against coronavirus, despite the fact that the country is a world leader in the production of such drugs. And because of this, other states that have ordered drugs in India may suffer.
India is considered a world leader in the pharmaceutical industry, a huge number of medicines are produced here, both according to the original recipe and generics. AstraZeneca Covishield Some time ago, India signed a contract with AstraZeneca to produce a vaccine against coronavirus, which received the local name CoviShield. Initially, they were sent free of charge to the poorest countries of the world, then 500 thousand doses were purchased by Ukraine, and for some time now India has suspended the export of any vaccines in order to provide its own population.
In India, vaccines are also produced directly under the AstraZeneca brand. The UK has ordered five million doses, but it may not receive them in the near future. Now at least 5 Indian states report a catastrophic shortage of vaccines, they require the central government to send all manufactured stocks for domestic use. The country is experiencing a second wave of coronavirus, and the level of infections is striking. For example, about 273,000 people fell ill in India on April 18. For comparison, during the entire period of the pandemic in neighboring China, only 105,000 people were infected.
So far, the British Ministry of Health cannot say when they will receive the coveted injections from India. Vaccines produced on the territory of the European Union are also stuck – the authorities do not let them into the UK, which has already vaccinated more than 60% of the population. And in most European countries, this figure barely exceeds 13%, writes The Daily Mail.
