Taking aspirin increases cancer patients’ chances of survival. This is the conclusion reached by researchers from the University of Cardiff in Wales.
The study showed that taking one of the most common over-the-counter medications in the world, aspirin, gives benefits to patients with tumors that outweigh the possible side effects. Direct evidence has been found that taking aspirin increased the life expectancy of such patients, and the study itself even revealed some biological mechanisms behind this effect.
The most significant of them is the ability of aspirin to reduce the indicators of inflammatory processes in the body, which are noted in malignant neoplasms. Aspirin is a powerful anticoagulant, it prevents normal blood clotting and the formation of blood clots, blocks excessive growth of blood vessels and affects cell repair. Note that a number of studies have previously shown the ability of aspirin in some types of tumors to increase survival by 20%.
But now important additional evidence has been obtained. Apparently, there is, as the researchers themselves put it, an amazing harmony of the biological effects of aspirin and the mechanisms leading to the development of cancer. This means that aspirin can be called a relatively safe drug for cancer patients.
