Portography is an X-ray examination of the portal vein and its intrahepatic branches. It is used to visualize the vessels of the portal vein system in order to study their structure, lumen width and collateral blood flow. The technique is used in the diagnosis of inflammatory diseases, congenital abnormalities of the liver and its vessels. It is prescribed if the treatment of an already identified pathology is ineffective, it is required to determine the obstruction in the portal system and clarify its cause. Portography is an invasive study, performed under local anesthesia and constant X-ray monitoring.
